The smartwatch game is becoming as crowded as Coruscant(An extremely crowded city-planet in Star Wars. Also, I’m a huge dork.) Each and every day it seems another major player enters the fray, schematics in hand, ready and able to disrupt the market. However, most of these schematics have to turn into wearable, buyable watches as of yet. It won’t be long before store shelves start getting crowded, but until that time we are left to speculate what the big companies will have for us when the time comes. Speaking of, information has leaked regarding a forthcoming foray into the market by industry leader Samsung.
Samsung, who you might know from the making of just about everything that exists in this planet, have long been rumored to be making a smartwatch or two. Specs have proven to be scarce, but now we know their upcoming ‘Galaxy Gear’ line of smartwatches will feature a camera. This is interesting as these watches don’t often focus on cameras since, well, they sit on our wrists and phones are better suited to this sort of thing. Samsung is bucking the trend, Dick Tracy style. What else will it do? It will reportedly feature an OLED screen around 2.5 to 3-inches with a 320 x 320 resolution, a possible 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a powerful battery. It should also boast NFC capability, Bluetooth functionality and a whole host of other bells and whistles.
Nothing is certain, of course, but rumors indicate the company will formally announce this product, along with a full line of specs, on September 3rd. Until then we can just fiddle with our old Casio watches and dreaming of some futuristic day we’ll be able to take photos with them.
