The hype around smartwatches has been huge especially when it comes to expected releases by Samsung. Perhaps the only company that can beat Samsung in smartwatch hype currently is Apple, with their rumored iWatch. Despite this, the Samsung Galaxy Gear recently made a number of news headlines because of its expected release, which is to be within a matter of days!
Samsungs executive vice president of mobile, Mr. Lee Young-hee recently said in an interview that the Samsung Galaxy Gear should be expected this Wednesday, the 4th of September. Lee also mentioned that the device is to be released as a “concept device” which could mean that it’s either not going to be released to the public any time soon, or it could simply be a marketing technique. Hopefully it is the latter.
In fact, it would be very smart for Samsung to release the Galaxy Gear to the public on September 4, as it would mean beating Apple to the smartwatch market, which could prove vital.
Unfortunately the device will not include the rumored and often expected flexible display, but that does not mean that we should rule out a flexible display for future releases. Other expected details about the device include a 2.5-inch display with a pixel resolution of 320 by 320, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, and a 4 megapixel camera with 720p video capture. It is also expected to run on Android Jelly Bean.
The Galaxy Gear is also expected to have its own app store, instead of using Google Play.
The smartwatch market is expected to grow a lot in the coming years, and being the tech giant that it is, Samsung will want to be at the forefront of this. In fact, smartwatch shipment are expected to reach 1 million by the end of this year, but then 36 million by the end of 2018.
