The Oculus Rift began its Kickstarter campaign about a year ago, and was launched with a 720p resolution. Well Oculus VR has just released an updated version of their headset that ramps up the resolution to 1080p, making the headset leaps and bounds more realistic.
Virtual Reality headsets have been a little hit and miss since they first started coming out. Despite this, the Oculus Rift is definitely one of the hits. The new 1080p resolution is the lowest resolution that will be shipped on the updates versions of the product.
The Oculus Rift also comes with an accelerometer, gyrometer and a magnetometer to make the experience that much better. These things, coupled with the improved resolution make the Oculus Rift feel and seem natural, apart from the fact that you are obviously wearing a large headset. Even this is less noticeable with the new version of the Oculus Rift, as it is lighter than the previous version.
The Oculus Rift already has a number of developers interested in the product, and there are a number of demo games available for the headset. But the headset can be used for more than simply gaming. It can also be used for things like watching movies. Watching movies on the headset is supposed to provide a truly immersive movie watching experience because of the 1080p resolution.
Games such as Half Life 2 are already supported on the Oculus Rift, and other popular titles should be supported by the platform in the near future. Perhaps we will see the Oculus Rift or something similar become a standard platform in the future. It certainly has the potential.
Overall the Oculus Rift is sure to be a hit product and is sure to provide a look into what the future of gaming will look like. Perhaps this, coupled with EEG technology should be a product that a company should consider making, as they both seem to be the direction that gaming is heading.
