Kickstarter sure can be a powerful tool for emerging tech. No longer do resourceful inventors have to rely on the “big guys” to get funding for their projects. They can rely on tons of “little guys” instead. Hey, that’s you and me! There is perhaps no bigger success story on this front than Pebble Technologies and their Pebble smartwatch. The company set up a modest goal of $100,000 for the watch and absolutely blew it out of the water. Once all the dust had cleared, they had raised over $10,000,000. You read that right. Ten million smackaroos. That’ll make a whole lot of intelligent timepieces.
So now that they are filthy stinking rich, let’s talk about the actual watch. It’s a gorgeous ARM-powered smartwatch with an e-paper display that can read emails and texts, listen to music, track your exercise and so much more. The company is not resting on their laurels, either. They recently had a sit-down with developers and unveiled their SDK. Â The OS was designed from the ground up to be easy to develop for. So expect the app flow to start upon release and not ebb anytime soon. Â That’s good because we at Crunchwear demand a 120-hour RPG that we can play on our watch. You listening folks?!
Pebble comes in a bunch of cool colors and should be released by the end of the year or early next year. No word on actual pricing but Kickstarter supporters nabbed one watch with a donation of $99 so we should expect these suckers to retail somewhere in the $100 range.
