The headset market has been growing a huge amount over the past few years, with products like Google Glass at the forefront of the headset madness. But the list of headsets continues to grow almost weekly, each product a little different than the one before it. One of the latest products to hit the headset market is the new Smart Glasses by Taiwanese company Oculon Optoelectronics.
Obviously the Smart Glasses are very similar to Google Glass in concept – it’s basically an augmented reality device. But Oculon boasts a number of “improvements” over Google Glass.
The prototype for the device is made from a rather thing black plastic frame, which is extremely light. While the prototype for the Smart Glasses have a 640 x 480 pixel resolution, the final version is set to have a full 720p display. While we do not know the resolution of the Google Glass display, Google has recommended that apps for Glass be developed at 640 x 360, which is quite a bit below the bar that the 720p display that Oculon’s device boasts. Not only that, but Oculon has said that they will develop a version of their glasses that have two displays, one for each eye.
The guts of the device are located n the right of the glasses, and are made by ChipSip. They include a dual core Cortex-A9 CPU, which is capable of running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and even support games.
The battery for the device is said to last longer than Google Glass, though we are not sure exactly on how long it will power the device for. Not only that, but the final version of the product is expected to include the use of a 5 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, Wifi, and even a bone conduction audio system to be able to hear audio as well as outside sounds.
It is also expected that the device will include speech recognition, connectivity to a Bluetooth control pad, and even gesture control. This however all depends on the software partners that Oculon chooses to go with for the device.
Mass production for the device is expected to take place in the very near future, and the retail price for the headset is expected to be at around $500. Oculon will not release the device under their own name, but instead will release it through a number of different vendors who will release it on their own brands.
