Augmented reality applications have been popping up a lot lately. To the uninitiated, augmented reality works exactly how the name implies. Devices using this tech quite literally augment reality by adding an extra layer of awesome-sauce. This tech is used in everything from Nintendo’s 3DS portable device to Google’s never-ever-written-about-on-this-blog Glass device. We have a long way to go to make AR something like the holodeck and other things we’ve seen and read in science fiction. However, as always, wearable technology companies are on top of it. Why, here is another forthcoming gadget to make your AR sensors swoon with anticipation.
The Meta 1 seeks to combine the functionality of your average pair of AR-embedded glasses with the gesture-based coolness of a 3D motion sensor(think Kinect.) The end result? Something that seems to be far greater than the sum of its parts. The device connects to the PC of your choice and then the camera tracks your finger movements, translating those movements to on-monitor movements. The glasses, meanwhile, create a virtual world for you to fool around in. The end result is something truly immersive that has not been attempted before to this degree. We likey. We likey very much.
Of course, with something this futuristic and cool, you have some waiting to do before you can try it out. The device’s creators have to receive funding for a market-worthy device, although there is a working prototype. They have taken to popular crowd-funding site Kickstarter to get their hands on that sweet, sweet cheddar. Speaking of, you’ll have to kick in $550 to be the first kid on your block to get their hands on the Meta 1. Here’s a video.
