There was a time, not so long ago, when the term “eyewear device” just meant your garden variety pair of glasses. Of course, science fiction has long predicted that the term would come to mean something much more substantive. Science fiction started to become science fact the day Google dropped their Glass device on the world. Now it seems you can’t go a day or two without a new pair of tech-heavy glasses showing up in news feeds. Most of them certainly do a great many cool things and, wouldn’t you know it, here is yet another one that sticks to that trend.
Avegant, maker of all manner of tech-heavy gadget, has been quietly slaving away on their Virtual Retina Display which is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a pair of glasses that pumps a 3D display right into your everloving retinas. This tech differs from Oculus Rift and similar products in that it doesn’t feature its own screen that simply gets close to your retinas. No, this device actually shoots the image right in to your retinas, allowing you to see projected WXGA (1,280 x 768) images. Dystopian cyberpunk future here we come! We, for one, couldn’t be more delighted at that coming prospect. Bring on the holodeck.
This tech is actually based on some military projects from several years ago. Hey, if it’s good enough for the military then it is certainly good enough for civilians(so they say.) No pricing or availability has been announced but the company has said they plan on doling out that information at next year’s CES in January in Las Vegas. We’ll let you know more then.
