The world of robotics has done some amazing things throughout the years. You know what it hasn’t done, though? Created a super-cool and realistic-smelling robotic armpit! Well, hang on to your gross-ass hats people. The future is upon us.
Kevin Grennan and researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have designed this bad boy with one function in mind, to mimic the smell of an actual armpit. Why on earth would anyone want to do that? The notion is that it can sense different smells, eventually, as well. The idea is to eventually be able to place it on a bomb-sniffing dog and have it work in conjunction with the dog to sniff the kind of fear that comes from a perspiring armpit.
The whole thing works by releasing a chemical called androstadienone, which is found in male sweat. Finally, a robot that smells like a smelly dude. Ugh, I guess. Unless you are into that kind of thing. More on this as it develops.
