A wise man once said “the dumber the world gets, the smarter the watches get.” OK, so nobody actually said that, but there sure a whole lot of neat smartwatches coming down the pike. Why, in a year’s time, if this blog is any indication, store shelves will be so crowded with the things that you will barely be able to walk the aisles. It’ll be smartwatches as far as the eye can see. Of course, to add to that visual cacophony, here is another smartwatch with another twist vying for precious wrist-based real estate.

Omate, a new company so don’t worry if it doesn’t ring a bell, is prepping their TrueSmart watch. This watch is so smart that it has smart right in the title. The hook here is cohabitation with a smartphone is optional. Most smartwatches, as you know, act as a sort of interpretation conduit from your phone, beaming information to your wrist so you don’t have to reach into your pocket and expend precious calories. The TrueSmart, however, has a whole host of features that work sans phone. What can it do? The watch runs Android 4.2.2 so the list of apps is as endless as developers would like it to be. It features a 1.54 inch color display, a 1.3GHz dual-core Cortex A7, a built-in 5-megapixel camera, 4GB of memory (with up to 32GB supported via microSD) and a micro SIM card slot for 3G connectivity. Oh, and it’s water-resistant! Not bad. Not bad at all.

The company has taken to Kickstarter of all places to finish rounding up funds for the truest and smartest watch you ever did see. You can become an early adopter by kicking in $179, which is a pretty good deal for this type of thing.
