First impression after using the device for a day is that it would be a great upgrade to the Mi Band 3 or earlier for users who prefer a band form factor over a watch, have invested in the Alexa ecosystem, and don’t need smartwatch features like third party apps, quick replies, or contactless payments. As with the Mi Bands 4 and 5, I found its most limiting factor to be the display. It has no always-on mode, legibility in bright sun isn’t great, and the top and bottom bezels are sizable. Reading notification content, changing settings, and even deciphering some watchface elements will be tough for those without perfect vision due to the tiny font sizes. If you mainly need a lightweight data gatherer and don’t rely on the display for more than an occasional glance, this could be a good fit. Otherwise I’d recommend other Amazfit products like the Bip S or GTR/GTS 2.

Update 2: The product is now returned, with semi working heart rate and non working sleep monitor, it’s fairly useless. In the two weeks of owning it, it managed to fully track my sleep exactly one time.It seems like a bata product, should have not been released yet.Update: lowering to two stars. The band stops checking the heart rate after a few hours every day and at night. A message pops up stating to wear the band properly…the only way to fix this is to reboot. It temporarily fixes the problem, but the issue appears again after a few hours. It’s pretty good for the price…its offers features that other companies charge 4x as much for.The battery lasts for ever, the display is big enough to show the required information, but small enough to not be distracting.Sleep tracking seems broken for me, still haven’t been able to track full night’s sleep yet.

Edit from my previous 4 star review– I have encountered two issues that I have raised with technical support and the review will be adjusted depending on response. First, the Zepp app is not available in the Google Play store for my tablet running Android 9.0. It is possible to download the Amazfit app, but it does not detect the Band 5. The Zepp app needs to support Android tablets because they are commonly used with treadmills and other fitness equipment.Second, the mileage calculation based on step count is way off. It is underreporting by approximately 20% from two previous fitness watches and various online calculators. I am guessing that the app is not properly adjusting for height/weight. I have confirmed that my data is entered correctly. I would prefer if this band could be detected by third party apps so that users could make direct comparisons to verify accuracy. Setting it as detectable in the bluetooth setting did not make it detectable on my phone running any app other than Zepp.Original review– I previously had the Letscom fitness tracker which was a good size but had a fatal flaw. In order to charge, the band pulled off revealing pins and plug that could be inserted into a USB charger. It failed to charge after a few months of usage and a useful watch become junk. Both Amazfit and Mi Band have magnetic chargers which will assure that the device does not fail from wear and tear on the physical contacts of a usb charger. The Amazfit has the advantage over Mi Band that it supports Alexa and blood oxygen. Setting up Alexa requires adding the service in the Zepp app. Then you have to right swipe the screen to enable Alexa. It is somewhat limited in that the watch can only respond text. It is very useful if you have smart home switches and lights already paired with Alexa. It enables you to control them from the watch as long as you are in Bluetooth range of your phone.Battery life is good. The watch is smart enough to automatically select your activities based on motion. This is a step up from the Letscom which requires the user to manually select the workout mode.Amazfit and other Chinese OEMs need to do a better job on the documentation for these devices. If you heavily advertise a feature like Alexa, include instructions in the box so that it’s not trial and error. If you have a link on your website for support chat, make sure it has a backend that isn’t a link to an ad hoc group of users on Facebook. It will be interesting to see if it accepts the same silicone bands as the Mi Band as there are not many options at present. Overall opinion is that it has very interesting features at this price point.

Planned to upgrade from my Mi Band 5 to get SpO2 readings and Alexa integration. Bad mistake! Amazfit changed to using Zepp app, and it is really poor compared to Mi Fit app or Notify & Fitness apps which won’t work with this band. Can’t download any other watch faces (at least not with Android 11), no adjustments for stride length, limited other adjustments like vibration strength, zip codes for weather, and which items can be shortcuts. Band hardware itself seems very finicky compared to Mi Band 5. Heart rate measurements while exercising stop recording until band is rebooted or removed and any perspiration removed. SpO2 readings also refuse to work much of the time. Too bad they didn’t get this right at launch. Maybe SW updates can help, but none since launch.Update: Notify & Fitness has a 2nd app specifically for Amazfit & it now works with Band 5 & allows watchfaces to be downloaded! Doesn’t always play well with Zepp app, but better than nothing yet from Zepp.
