As an elderly physician with medical issues, given the risks of Covid-19, I need protection beyond a mask and glasses when taking care of patients. Medical PAPR devices are hard to come by and the ones I have seen are not that well made. This one arrived a few hours ago after only a two week wait due to backorder. I immediately put the battery on charge and donned the helmet just for fit. It is extremely light, well-designed, comfortable and of the highest quality. After the battery fully charged, I set up the PAPR blower, attached it to the hood, and am sitting here typing as I comfortably wear the helmet with the PAPR blower on. The air flow on low is more than sufficient and very quiet. I suspect it will take some getting used to to wear this for hours on end. Even the leather belt for the PAPR unit is top quality and comes with a convenient clip to safely hold the helmet on the waist belt during breaks. I will add further reviews as experience teaches. It is rare nowadays to believe when I buy most anything that I have gotten my money’s worth. I surely have with this absolute gem. It will afford me much peace of mind as I work.

What I like:* I have great visibility through the mask.* Patients who are hard of hearing are able to see my mouth when I talk, making communication easier than if I had on an N95 mask.* I’m not sharing the same PPE with coworkers.* I feel reasonably protected and if something urgent happens with a patient, I can respond quickly.* The battery lasts for a long time. What I don’t like:* The mask is heavier than expected.* It has taken quite a bit of adjusting and still tips forward and slides down, pushing on my eyebrows unless it is so tight around my head that it gives me a headache. I ordered the crown support. Hopefully it helps.* The elastic around my face is causing skin irritation -not as bad as a teal N95 mask- but for the cost of this, I’d like to be comfortable.* The leather belt is extremely long and doesn’t seem to have a good solution to deal with the long tail, other than cutting it off.* Wearing the PAPR for a 12 hour shift is causing low back pain. This obviously was not made with medical use in mind, but is reasonably adaptable for the current circumstances. It seems to do the job we want it to do. My main complaint is that for the equivalent of a mortgage payment, I expected it to be comfortable to wear. It is not. I find myself distracted by the elastic irritating my jawline, the mask sliding down the front of my face, and my low back hurting from the PAPR waist pack. I’ll prioritize safety over comfort and deal with it. Had I known what it would feel like to wear it, I would have looked for other options.

Okay, here is a over analyzed breakdown of this product without an “at work explanation”-The mask itself is mostly comfortable to wear. It sits on my head nicely and took a bit of tinkering to get it to fit just perfect. but it got there. Take a few minutes to adjust and wear for 15-20 min to make sure its comfortable for use before you have to actually use it. so you don’t have to tinker with it on in a volatile environment.-If you have a beard there is plenty of space to fit it in the mask, there is a Pouch like area directly under your chin so your beard can fit there, However if you have a short beard and have sensitive skin it could cause some irritation. IF you have stubble, don’t. The band will happily irritate the daylights out of your lower jaw.If you don’t have the pleasure of facial hair, people with sensitive skin my find the band irritating. But better to have a slight jaw irritation then to breath in either covid or a room full of sawdust, or whatever it is you are trying to filter.- Mask weight, Personally i have a neck fusion and i did not find this uncomfortable to wear for 9 hours straight. Its made of light plastic and it’s durable. I seem to bump my head a lot because i’m not used to having such a big bump radius on my head so durability has been tested extensively.-The battery lasts all day on MED setting, i haven’t needed it on High for a full day yet so i cant say it will last all day at work. (i’ll update this when i test High setting for a full day. )-The hose kept touching the top of my head at first but with a few seconds of adjusting its placement, that is solved. its also very flexible and not ridged enough to restrict movement so you will barely notice it. its also soft so its not irritating when it bumps you in the back.-The belt is FAR too long but I have discovered that if you pull the belt through the provided loop, as normal, you can loop it back under the same loop again. You can pass the belt through the loop up to 3 times, imagine the resulting shape as “unu”, it greatly reduces the length of the belt overhang. Once the belt is bent on each side it wont slip out and be flopping about.-The overall weight of the battery pack/filter unit may be encumbering to those who wear it too high on their body, such as above the waist on your lower back. I wear mine below my belt of my pants. It’s not touching my back and It may take getting used to, but it solves any sort of issues with strain on the back. However it doesn’t do anything for sitting down in a chair. But that’s the case with all devices like this, they wern’t designed for that in the first place. Just take it off and put it somewhere the tube reaches, like the floor.- Noise level: Its fairly noisy for an office setting. If you work somewhere that has a decent amount of ambient noise it will blend into the background pretty easy.-The carrying bag provided neatly fits the mask and filter unit however you need to detach the hose from both to make this happen.-The belt clip provided is only Slightly useful. I find that whenever i walk too fast, the mask like to Jump out of the clip, either its designed poorly or its not supposed to be used like a walking storage clip. A strip of hook and loop, fixes it, Just glue a Hook strip that goes across the gap and a loop strip on the side. and it holds it firmly in place so you can walk around with it strapped on you securely. If you glue it up any other way there is a possibility that your going to rub your hand on it frequently when going into your pockets which will irritate the skin, that’s my 2 cents.- My last comment is for those who thought of the inevitable bodily function. No it does not completely filter out your own farts when you let them go. Personally it surprised me BUTT not unexpected that the gas seems to make its way into your mask from the filter. However I wasn’t able to smell any similar smells in restrooms and other smelly areas that the smell is common in. I’m guessing it was because of the concentration and distance to the intake and i’m not testing this to confirm. If you pass gas frequently, wear the filter on your front or something else to save yourself from assaulting your face. (it had to be said)I hope you found this a useful.
