Remember the old days? You’d get a new pair of shoes from the shoemaker who lived the street, each pair lovingly rendered by hand to complete one task and complete it well. That task? Walking, of course. OK. We don’t remember those days either. In any event, those days are long gone. Thanks to the wearable technology boom shoes are designed to do a whole bunch of other things besides just get you from point A to point B. Besides, connecting points is boring. Bring on the cool, techy nonsense!
In today’s edition “wow, shoes can do that?” we present to you a designed by the name of Dominic Wilcox. He’s long been a megafan of The Wizard of Oz and decided to put his money shoes where his mouth is. These aptly named No Place Like Home GPS Shoes do exactly what the name suggests, they use the magic of GPS to get your sorry butt home. Commissioned by Global Footprint, a UK-based visual arts and living heritage organization, Wilcox decided he wanted “to make a pair of shoes that can navigate you to anywhere you wish to travel to. I thought about the Wizard of Oz and how Dorothy could click her shoes together to go home.â€
The cool thing? It actually turns on via heel click just like the source material. You upload your destination via USB, click your heels and off you go. The shoes will direct you to your destination by showing you a bunch of colored lights. You’ll never get lost again! Of course, you also said that the first time you got your hands on a smartphone.
