This Pocket Gadget Can Tell if Meat is Safe to Eat

peressniffer-1Eating food has to rank up there as one of the all-time great activities a person can waste their time on. Let’s run down a list. Exercise? Yuck. Sex? Cool, but you could end up with a baby and nobody wants that(just kidding.) Watching a movie? Fun, but made infinitely more so by throwing eating into the mix. About the only downside about chomping down on some delicious grub is the small chance that said grub is infected with disease-causing bacteria. Nothing ruins a perfectly good Friday night by spending it on the floor by the toilet. Unfortunately, aside from taking rudimentary precautions, there seems to be no way to actually know if the food you are about to ingest is infected with anything. Not anymore! Technology is here to the rescue.

Introducing the grossly named but innovative Peres Food Sniffer. This, uh, food sniffer, uh, sniffs your food and lets you know if it is safe to eat. What in the what? It’s true! The Peres samples the air around whatever meat you are about to consume, measuring the levels of volatile organic compounds and ammonia along with the temperature and humidity, then transmits the data to your smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. Peres can measure the safety of beef, pork, poultry and fish, so meat eaters are in luck. If you indulge mostly on dangerous spinach, you are on your own(for now.)

This nifty gadget isn’t out yet, but they’ve taken to crowdfunding site Indiegogo to reach their financial goals for mass market production. You can preorder one for around $120.
