174HUDSON Stack: A Folding Helmet Without the Big Price ...

The 174HUDSON Stack packable helmet is a lightweight, easy to use, inexpensive folding helmet. The ONLY downside of this helmet is that it isn’t the tightest-folding collapsible helmet. Although, I’ll point out, it still collapses quite a bit. It stays firmly folded, or firmly open, so you never have to worry about it sliding out.

Folding Helmet Reviews - The Best and All the Rest

174Hudson Stack. The 174Hudson Stack Packable Helmet is a more affordable version of the Closca Fuga. It's comfortable, easy to open and fold, and highly portable, without the big price tag. FEND. The FEND is a new entrant to the folding helmet market, and we expect it to be very popular.

I love this helmet. It folds up and fits inside my handbag so I can ride my bike places and not walk around carrying a helmet. It is cute on and really sturdy. The straps are easily adjustable and don’t pinch my chin. I am buying another one to give as a present.

I commute in the city (sometimes bike, sometimes walk) and it’s nice to have a helmet I can bring to work and throw in my backpack or desk drawer. It’s also been nice to have it with me flat in my bag without my bike, for when I grab a scooter or bike share throughout the day. I used to either forgo wearing one or lug my old helmet around with me clipped to my backpack or leave it sitting on top of my desk… so this is a huge improvement. The collapsing mechanism feels extremely sturdy, and it has plenty of adjustments. I’m a 5’10 male and the medium is snug, but perfect.

  3. Linda Camp

My husband and I each purchased a helmet for a recent cycling trip in Europe. The way the helmet collapses makes it easy to transport on trips. The helmet is lightweight and comfortable. What I most like about the helmet is how well it protects the head during a crash. I misread a curb while cycling and crashed, with my head striking the pavement hard. The helmet absorbed all of the impact, and I walked away with no injuries to the head. The helmet suffered a very slight, barely noticeable dent, and I am so grateful for the protection it provided. I highly recommend this helmet.

Rather than pack my helmet for our last trip, I rolled the dice and bought this one. I always wear a helmet, but traveling with one is a real pain when you’re trying to pack light and creates the temptation to go without. I’ve been lamenting for years the need for a good packable travel helmet, and I heard about the new Morpher helmets, but $150 was much too rich for me. After researching on Amazon, the Hudson seemed to be the only one in my price range with consistently good reviews, so I gave it a shot, and was not at all disappointed. It packs down smaller than a pair of running shoes, and is also easy to clip to my purse when I’m not on the bike. I got lots of comments (all good ones!) although it does look a little like the hats that the band Devo used to wear, but I think that’s part of the charm. It is slightly warmer (less air flow) than a regular helmet, but only slightly and not a problem unless you already have a tendancy for terrarium-like conditions with your present helmet. I’m very happy with the helmet and the fact that it makes traveling so much easier and safer!

  5. ChillyLos

I purchased to use as a travel helmet for riding rented bikes. Based on their sizing chart I ordered a size large. It is lightweight and folds down flat which is convenient for packing. Based on the design and my research, I felt it would protect me in a crash. However, I returned it prior to using it because I did not like the style and width of the helmet. For the benefit of its ability to fold, the width appears much greater vs. a typical helmet. It’s not a bad looking helmet but it looked like a bowl on my head similar to what the old school group Devo wore when performing the song Whip It!I do recommend the helmet for people who travel or need to fit their helmet in a backpack. It’s a good price for a folding helmet. Just did not work for me.

  6. Jen

I am a commuter who will often jump on a DIVVY bike (bike share), but carrying a helmet on top of everything else was difficult. This helmet folds into itself making it easy to snap in to the top of my backpack & was just was i was hoping for.I measured at 59cm, but went with the large & am very happy i did. The large just fits me. I do have a history of having to buy XL helmets. The helmet seems just has sturdy as any other general bike helmet. I like the look of it as well. I’ve been told it looks modern yet retro…

  7. Jefferson

I wasn’t sure a collapsible helmet was a great idea, but this thing is very well designed. it feels thicker and meatier than a normal helmet. I ordered the large size because I’m huge, and it actually is slightly too big for me. It’s easy to just attach it to my pack when I go out, and then I have a helmet if I want to take a Lime or whatever. the fact that it folds in on itself makes it not awkward to carry with you, and the construction gives off the feeling that the manufacturer wants to prove to you that their collapsible helmet is safe.As an aside, I got the only color that wasn’t white/grey/black, because I don’t like boring, loose-me colors on products. Everybody that sees it is very impressed with the function, but they all say the same thing: “OMG it looks like a Spaceballs helmet”. It’s certainly not going to win any fashion contests, but it does a great job as a helmet.

  8. Fab Philly

I first purchased a medium and felt that the top corners of my head were feeling too tight. Then ordered a large which was too large. I stayed with the medium and eventually it “broke in”. It’s not my only helmet but one I carry in my backpack for when I might ride a Citibike in NYC, as its often a spontaneous ride. This will reduce the number of times I ride with no helmet. The Museum of Modern Art Carriescthis in black w/yellow trim (taxi yellow), but I didn’t want a black helmet. This light grey stays cooler and more visible with it neon green trim.It is a bit odd looking when you look at yourself in the mirror… a bit like the group, Devo, and a bit reminiscent of the Guggenheim Museum.
