We’ve been covering wearable tech here at Crunchwear for a long time. We’ve seen niche products come and go. We’ve seen new industries pop up virtually overnight. It happened with the smartwatch and it is set to happen very soon for virtual reality tech. Now, anyone that follows wearables certainly knows that the apex of VR tech is the Oculus Rift. This amazing little headset quite literally inserts you in any video game your little heart fancies. Having briefly tried it, it’s pretty darned spiffy. The  consumer-grade model isn’t even out yet but that sure hasn’t stopped heads from turning. One such head was on Mark Zuckerberg. It turned so much that he now owns the company.

That’s right. Facebook bought Oculus Rift. This bizarre meeting of the minds came about after Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook team plunked down a massive two billion dollars for purchasing rights. That’s right. Two billion. Not bad for a company that was little more than a Kickstarter page around two years ago. Apart from the buying, we aren’t sure what that means for the tech itself. Will it not be used in games as previously intended? Will it now be used just to show advertisements and pictures of acquaintance’s babies? Your guess is as good as mine and only time will tell. In the meantime, there’s always Sony’s forthcoming VR-device which is sure to be used exclusively for gaming.
